Two improbable comebacks produced one extremely uplifting victory for the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles trailed by six runs in the first inning and entered the ninth down by one.

Orioles get SS Castro from Rockies, dump Bynum (AP)

The Baltimore Orioles addressed their shaky shortstop situation by acquiring Juan Castro from the Colorado Rockies in a trade of minor league infielders on Saturday. The 36-year-old has more than 11 years of major league experience and played in seven games with Cincinnati this season before being released in April.

Loewen's pitching career ended by elbow injury (AP)

Orioles left-hander Adam Loewen has abandoned his career as a pitcher because of a stress fracture in his left elbow, the same injury that sidelined him last season and twice put him on the disabled list this year. Loewen, 24, intends to return to the majors as an outfielder. Had Loewen opted for a second operation on his elbow, it would have taken him at least 18 months to return.

Orioles Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Jeremy Guthrie finally got some run support Friday.

And with some help from the Orioles' offense, the staff ace earned his sixth win. The Orioles were scoring 3.95 runs per game in Guthrie's starts, and just 1.43 in games Guthrie lost.

Friday, the Orioles scored seven for him—just the third time they'd done so in a Guthrie start this year—and the right-hander needed just 96 pitches to piece together six solid innings.

Guthrie allowed 12 hits and four runs, and walked two against five strikeouts. But Detroit stranded nine runners—five in scoring position with two outs—and the Orioles turned three double plays.

"He battled," Luke Scott said.

After sputtering into the All-Star break in a 1-for-21 slump, Luke Scott assured Baltimore Orioles manager Dave Trembley there was no reason to worry. According to Trembley, Scott said, "I'll get hot the second half. It's always been that way with me in my career." Scott backed up those words Friday night, hitting two home runs to lead the Orioles past the Detroit Tigers 7-4.

Tigers use 3 homers to dump Orioles 6-5 (AP)

Baltimore Orioles left fielder Jay Payton leaps to make the catch, taking away a home run from Detroit Tigers' Gary Sheffield in the eighth inning of a baseball game Thursday, July 17, 2008 in Baltimore. The Tigers won 6-5. (AP Photo/Gail Burton).

A few words of advice went a long way for Gary Sheffield -- say, around 750 feet. Sheffield hit one home run and was robbed of another, and the Detroit Tigers also got homers from Brandon Inge and Marcus Thames in a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. Tigers manager Jim Leyland was shopping for clothes in New York during the All-Star break when someone he described only as a...

Six of the Boston Red Sox players who will play in the 2008 All Star Game, from left, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Dustin Pedroia, J.D. Wakefield, Boston bats stymie O's in 12-1 win (AP)

Baltimore Orioles left fielder Luke Scott walks to his position in front of the scoreboard during the eighth inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Saturday, July 12, 2008.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona thinks he might be seeing Tim Wakefield at his best -- strong words, considering the knuckleballer won 14 of his first 15 starts in Boston. That was back in 1995, long before the soon-to-be 42-year-old righty became a mainstay of the Red Sox rotation. "Everything's been clicking for me," Wakefield said after pitching seven innings of two-hit ball to take advantage of...

Johnson, Martinez square off as Futures managers (AP)

Davey Johnson has many fond memories of Yankee Stadium, and one in particular he'd like to forget. Johnson was managing the Baltimore Orioles when 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier deflected Derek Jeter's fly ball over the wall during the 1996 AL championship series. The disputed home run helped Tino Martinez and the Yankees advance to their first of four World Series titles in five years.

No win for no-hit kid Buchholz vs. Orioles (AP)

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Burres throws out Boston Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia on a grounder in the third inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Friday, July 11, 2008. The Orioles beat the Red Sox 7-3.

The last time he faced the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park, Clay Buchholz overcame the nerves of his second major-league start and the mounting pressure of making baseball history to pitch a no-hitter. Looks like he didn't get all the jitters out of his system. Brian Roberts greeted Buchholz with a game-opening double and was a home run short of the cycle Friday night as Baltimore knocked the Red...
