Moyer baffles Marlins; Mets' streak ends (AP)

Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer fooled the Florida Marlins with his deceptive stuff for the 10th straight time. Ten in a row is where the Mets' streak ended after they couldn't figure out the Reds' Bronson Arroyo. The 45-year-old Moyer beat Florida for the 10th time in 10 career starts, pitching six innings Friday night to help the visiting Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory.

Marlins Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Marlins are down another starting pitcher as left-hander Andrew Miller went on the 15-day disabled list Friday with right knee tendinitis.

Miller said the knee has bothered him periodically since spring training in 2007. The Marlins knew about the condition and discussed it with the Tigers before completing the eight-play trade that sent Miller to Florida in December.

On Thursday, a second magnetic resonance imaging exam on Miller's right knee showed inflammation—the same result of a first MRI that he had in September.

"We tried rest and rehab and spent a ton of time doing that last year and it's still here this year, so what can we do?" he said. "We're going to try and get through the season and then see what we can do to make it a non-issue."

Moyer, Phils beat Marlins 4-2 (AP)

David Lee Owen, portraying as Santa Claus, throws out the ceremonial first pitch before a baseball game between the Florida Marlins and the Philadelphia Phillies, Friday, July 18, 2008, at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. The Marlins were celebrating

Against junkballer Jamie Moyer, those home run swings the Florida Marlins like to take produced mostly feeble grounders and popups. Again. The 45-year-old left-hander beat Florida for the 10th time in as many career starts, pitching six innings Friday night to help the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory.

Uggla trying to forget All-Star game (AP)

Dan Uggla went out to that familiar spot in the infield, got on his toes, bent his knees, put his glove to the dirt and fielded balls time and time again without error. Too bad Dolphin Stadium was empty. Coming off one of the worst All-Star games ever by a second baseman, Uggla took infield practice during a team workout Thursday evening, two days after making a record three errors and going...

Billingsley Ks 13, Dodgers rout Marlins 9-1 (AP)

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Cory Wade, right, and catcher Russell Martin celebrate their 9-1 baseball victory over the Florida Marlins Sunday, July 13, 2008, in Los Angeles.

The best thing about the Los Angeles Dodgers this season has been their pitching staff. Their most consistent starter has been Chad Billingsley. The 23-year-old right-hander struck out a career-high 13 without walking a batter Sunday, and the Dodgers used a six-run first inning to beat the Florida Marlins 9-1 and avoid a four-game sweep.

Uggla's RBI double helps Marlins win in 11 (AP)

Florida Marlins' Dan Uggla, right, scores past a dejected Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Russell Martin on a sacrifice fly by Cody Ross during the 11th inning of a baseball game in Los Angeles, Saturday, July 12, 2008.

For the second time in three games, the Florida Marlins took the lead in the 11th inning and Kevin Gregg got the save. The big right-hander is halfway to 40 saves after recording 32 last year in his first season as a full-time closer. "I enjoy pitching late in ballgames," Gregg said Saturday night after the Marlins used Dan Uggla's RBI double and Cody Ross' sacrifice fly in the 11th to beat the Los...

Tampa Bay turnaround highlights 'crazy' first half (AP)

Tampa Bay is on top, the Chicago Cubs keep winning and Major League Baseball might add instant replay before the summer's over. What in the name of Babe Ruth is going on with this grand ol' game? Conventions are getting shattered everywhere, just like those thin-handled maple bats. Indeed, it's been a wild first half for the national pastime: one no-hitter, three fired managers and Ken Griffey Jr.'s...

Marlins' Volstad pitches into ninth, beats Dodgers (AP)

Florida Marlins' pitcher Chris Volstad, center, is congratulated by manager Fredi Gonzalez, left, after giving up a run during the ninth inning of the baseball game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Friday July 11, 2008. Looking on are Hanley Ramirez, third from right, Jorge Cantu, Dan Uggla, second right. The Marlins won, 3-1. Volstad (2-0) became the sixth pitcher since 1971 to get a victory as a starter and as a reliever in his first two big league appearances, joining teammate Doug Waechter who did it with Tampa Bay in 2003. Volstad came within one out of a shutout in his first major league start.

Chris Volstad was one out away from a complete-game shutout in his first major league start. He didn't get it, because All-Star Russell Martin singled up the middle just past the outstretched glove of shortstop Hanley Ramirez to drive in a run. Volstad wasn't complaining after Kevin Gregg finished the Florida Marlins' 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

Ramirez HR, 5 hits lead Marlins over Dodgers in 11 (AP)

Florida Marlins' Hanley Ramirez, right, gets a hug from Alfredo Amezaga after the Marlins defeated Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4, at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, Thursday July 10, 2008. Ramirez hit a one run home run off Dodgers relief pitcher Brian Falkenborg in the 11th inning of the baseball game.

Each time Hanley Ramirez came to the plate, the Florida Marlins had no one in scoring position. That turned out to be a blessing for them, considering the vast difference in his average with runners in scoring position and without. Ramirez homered with two outs in the 11th inning, capping the first five-hit game of his career and helping the Marlins beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 on Thursday...

Olsen throws 8 strong innings, Marlins beat Padres (AP)

Florida Marlins closer Kevin Gregg, right, and catcher John Baker congratulate each other after the Marlins' 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in a baseball game Wednesday, July 9, 2008, in San Diego.

Scott Olsen came within three outs of stopping a record streak the Florida Marlins would rather forget. Olsen pitched eight strong innings and appeared to be on his way to Florida's first complete game in 267 tries, the longest drought in major league history. But the left-hander was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth as the Marlins added a couple of insurance runs Wednesday for a 5-2 victory...

Lowly Padres play like eager Beavers (AP)

Florida Marlins center fielder Cody Ross slides across the outfield grass after catching a hit by San Diego Padres' Nick Hundley in the eighth inning of a baseball game Tuesday, July 8, 2008 in San Diego.

The Portland Padres? The San Diego Beavers? Looking decidedly like the Triple-A Portland Beavers, the San Diego Padres came up with a nifty big league result Tuesday night, beating the Florida Marlins 10-1 to snap a nine-game home losing streak. Rookie Chase Headley, playing in his 20th big league game this season, had his best performance yet with three hits and four RBIs, including a three-run...
