The Orlando Magic went into the summer determined to strengthen their backcourt.

They have gotten off to a good start.

The Magic signed free agent shooting guard Mickael Pietrus from the Golden State Warriors, expecting him to slow down all the guards and small forwards that smoked them last season.

People like LeBron James, Rip Hamilton, Michael Redd and Dwyane Wade might not have such an easy time against the Magic anymore.

They also drafted shooting guard Courtney Lee, a four-year starter with good defensive skills from Western Kentucky. The addition of those two led to the decision not to re-sign last year's starter Maurice Evans, a free agent who will go elsewhere.

Chandler to train with Team USA (AP)

New Orleans Hornets center Tyson Chandler has accepted an invitation to train with the U.S. national team in Las Vegas later this month, shortly before the team departs for the Olympics in China. "This will allow Tyson and the team to be better prepared in the event that he is needed," USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said Tuesday on USA Basketball's Web site.

Dwight Howard has been brushing up on his Chinese. He can already say "hello" and "I love you." Soon, he and his Olympic teammates hope, the All-Star center this summer will add "gold" to that list. "Everybody wants to see us win, and they're counting on us to win," Howard said Tuesday, preparing for the men's basketball training camp in Las Vegas next week before the team heads to Beijing.

Orlando Magic sign point guard Anthony Johnson (AP)

The Orlando Magic signed veteran free-agent point guard Anthony Johnson on Tuesday. Johnson will back up starter Jameer Nelson as he enters his 12th NBA season. He played in 69 games last season for the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings. Johnson had a brief stint with Orlando in the 1999-2000 season, appearing in 18 games.
