• When Muhsin Muhammad left the Carolina Panthers in 2004, the team knew it would be tough to replace him. They didn't know just how tough. That's one of the reasons the Panthers quickly snatched up Muhammad, even at age 35, when he was released by the Chicago Bears. "We never really filled that role once he left," coach John Fox said. With Steve Smith on the sidelines after going down with a season-ending ending leg injury, Muhammad stepped up in 2004 as the No. 1 receiver and caught 16 touchdown passes from Jake Delhomme. The Carolina Panthers signed two more draft choices Thursday, reaching deals with linebacker Dan Connor and defensive end Hilee Taylor. Carolina has signed five of its nine draft picks. Still unsigned are first-rounders Jonathan Stewart and Jeff Otah, third-round choice Charles Godfrey, and seventh-round pick Geoff Schwartz.

The Carolina Panthers signed fifth-round draft choice Gary Barnidge from Louisville on Tuesday. The team did not release terms of the deal. Barnidge, a 6-foot-5, 247-pound tight end, figures to contend for playing time with two other young tight ends: Jeff King and Dante Rosario. Barnidge, a first-team All-Big East selection in 2007, played in 47 games with 29 starts for Louisville.
